There is an innate desire in every one of us to be approved. Whether it is at home, at work, in Church or within any setting we find ourselves, there is always that desire in us to get the nod from others, regarding the things we have done. This is not necessarily a bad thing because after all, if we are commended for doing good, it motivates us to want to do better. The problem comes however when the tide changes and the same people who approved us and said things that made us feel good, no longer see the great things they lauded us for but rather start focusing on our short comings. The first recorded miracle of Jesus was at Cana in Galilee (John 2) We don’t know whether the couple was a relation or not but we know that Mary, Jesus’ mo...

We live in uncertain times and this has been made more obvious with the way the Coronavirus pandemic has caused significant losses to nations, communities, families and individuals in terms of both human and material resources. Although a number of countries are easing back on the lockdowns imposed earlier in the year, it is evident that life as we know it will not be the same in the near future until a vaccine is found to immunise against the virus. With all of this going on, it is easy to feel worried and anxious. Many have been furloughed for several months and are not sure of getting their jobs back, some have actually been let go of their jobs at a time when most companies are not even recruiting. As Christians, we not immune to wha...

I recently found myself suffering from anxiety to the point where I almost became physically ill. It all stemmed from some little things that I was worrying about and before I knew it, other things began to crop up which ordinarily wouldn’t have been a big deal but considering my state of mind, it became a massive deal. I found myself gradually slipping deeper and deeper into a spiral but I did what I knew to do in such circumstances - I cried out to God and He rescued me. I began to take encouragement from His word and I realised I wasn’t the only one. Ask Elijah when he thought he was the only one left among the prophets. He became fearful when Jezebel threatened his life. This was a man who stood toe to toe against the prophets of Baal but the threat of one woman se...

Everyone wants to be happy. It is therefore not surprising why the two songs, “Don’t worry be happy” by Bobby McFerrin and “Happy” by Pharell Williams became instant hits and are still popular today. This begs the question however, “Is it possible to always be happy?” For instance, is it realistic to follow Bobby McFerrin’s advice in the song when he said, Ain’t got no place to lay your head,Somebody came and took your bed, Don’t worry, be happy. The landlord say your rent is late,He may have to litigate Don’t worry, be happy.I am yet to see someone who has been rendered homeless who says “I am happy”. These songs are feel good songs that give you that temporary feelin...

In the light of recent global COVID-19 epidemic and it’s impact on countries, communities, families and individuals, I have been reflecting on the plans we make in the midst of so much uncertainty in this world that we live in.No doubt at the beginning of this year, we all had plans for what we wanted to achieve. Personally, I was looking forward to a couple of conferences I had lined up for the year - that isn’t going to happen. I was also hoping to take my wife on a holiday trip sometime during the summer. That also isn’t going to happen. I had a couple of invites to weddings during the course of the year. There is still a question mark on whether those will hold or not depending on what happens before the dates and one has already been postponed till October.

As many countries implement various measures to tackle the spread of Coronavirus, I couldn’t help but think of the role that the Church should be playing at this critical time.A few days ago, I was sharing with my wife my thoughts on the effect of the coronavirus lockdown on many churches which meant they could not open their doors to the public. It dawned on me that it didn’t matter whether the church building was a small community hall sitting 20 people or a mega church sitting 50,000 - they were all empty.  One fact emerges from this thought, the Church is not made of buildings. No matter how wonderful and lovely they are, how big or small they are, how organised or structured they are, at this time in history, they have become unus...
