I have a very special friend who has taught me more about true friendship, than I could learn in a thousand lifetimes. And throughout her many illnesses she has taught me more about courage, than I could learn on a battlefield. She has been buffeted by disease, cut apart by surgeons and sewn back together, and she has endured long, painful recoveries. Some successful. Some not. Yet one thing remains constant with Diane…her absolute selfless struggle to do more for others, than she will ever do for herself.
Diane and I live within an hour of one another. We are both often housebound due to health issues. Our friendship began over the internet, due to an odd twist of events. Her brother is my pastor. We both had health issues, and we began to share and pray together. Al...

Giving is something fundamental, something deeply rooted in the Christian faith. The gospel, meaning ‘good news’ has in its message, the ultimate act of giving. We all have at one time or the other, heard the scripture and probably know it by heart, “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life’ John 3:16.
The natural man is innately selfish and full of greed. The spiritual man on the other hand knows that He is a beneficiary of divine grace. He knows that the very life he has, is not even his own but is given by the one who can within seconds, withdraw the breath of his nostrils.
Christ never minced words when he spoke about giving, especially to others. They were clear and direct words, n...

I woke up with a start. I didn’t need to strain my ears to know what had woken me up. It was the sound of rainfall and the heavy winds accompanying it. My wife and I got up, closed all the windows, checked that the children were okay in their rooms and went back to bed.
I however could not sleep immediately. It was a Sunday morning and I wondered how I would make it to church with my family. We didn’t have a car yet and our church was about two buses away from home. “Maybe the rain would relent” I thought, as I felt myself drifting into sleep again. Something in my mind however told me, I would come back from the land of dreams to meet the rain in full swing.
I woke up for the second time and contrary to my earlier hopes, the rain was in full swing. Staying at home was a very...

Coval Russell spent 426 days in jail for stabbing his landlord with a pocketknife back in April 2001. It was the only time he ever ran afoul of the law. And that could be considered a tribute of sorts to Mr. Russell, for he was 90 years old when he committed his crime. He had never even had a traffic ticket before.
He was a World War II veteran who lived in Paradise until he got in trouble. (I didn't make that up. Paradise is a quiet little town in California.) Behind bars, the other inmates of Butte County Jail called him "Pops" and gave him dibs on the TV set, let him go first in the food line, and reserved him a place in the Monopoly game marathons. Blind in one eye and suffering from prostate cancer, Russell loved his tiny cell. The relationships he formed with the transient...

Elizabeth was a member of a church. She had a good personality and was well liked especially among the youth. She was actively involved with one of the groups in church. There was no doubt that she loved the things of God.
Suddenly something went wrong. Elizabeth found herself in a relationship. Initially she shared her fears and concerns about the relationship with one or two people she respected in church. After a while however, her attendance in church began to fizzle out. Some thought it had to do with her job schedule and had no reason to worry since she was a standing member of the church. News however filtered in that Elizabeth was pregnant. All efforts to reach her proved abortive as she cut off all communication links with anyone from the church.

Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on…Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap…and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? …But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you…Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not." (From: Luke 12:22, 24, 31 & 40)
In the "Daily Bread" recently, I read about a woman who lived in California who slept every night with her shoes and a flashlight under her bed. Why? Because her mother taught her always to be ready.
Since they lived in earthquake country, should an earthquake take place in the middle of the night, shattering windows and scattering debris, she would be prepared to wal...
