Those who have been Christians for a while may have read or heard of the acronym P.U.S.H. I used to view it exclusively in terms of prayer but I recently got a new perspective inspired by one of the conference speakers at the recently held Assemblies of God (GB) National Conference. In Part 1 of this article, we will examine one of the aspects of this acronym. The first aspect which is commonly known is; Pray Until Something Happens. Prayer is at the core of the Christian journey. Why is prayer so important? Prayer is the vehicle with which we commune with God but it does not stop there. It also strengthens our faith and helps us draw closer to God. Interestingly, our Christian journey starts with prayer. We come to the realisation that we are sinners and...

I have always been captivated with the account of Moses’ relationship with God as written in the scriptures. One aspect that I found really interesting is how much he depended on God. Leading the children of Israel to the promised land with their tendency to rebel at the slightest obstacle was obviously a tedious and onerous task for Moses. In Exodus 33, God told Moses it was time for the Israelites to move from where they had camped while he met with God on Mount Sinai. He had been away for 40 days but before he returned, the people had decided to make other gods for themselves because according to them, “We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 32:1)Once the rebellion...

The word “Church” can mean different things depending on the context within which it is used. Generally speaking, people tend to think of Church as an organisation. For example, the Church of England or the Catholic Church. Others think of Church as a building where Christians meet and hold services. In Scriptural terms, are these definitions correct? Let us dive into scripture to help us discover the origins of the Church and what it means. The first time the word ‘Church’ was mentioned in the Bible is in Mathew 16:18. Jesus had just asked the disciples what people said about Him and they responded, “Some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah and others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets” (Mathew 16:14) Jesus then asked them, “Who do you think I a...

In Part 1, we examined how prayer came into being, tracing it's origins back to when the generation of Seth began to all upon the name of the Lord (Genesis 4:25-26) We considered what would have been the main focus of their prayers and highlighted two topical issues which were, repentance from sin and God fulfilling His promise to crush satan's head and restoring man to his original state. Part 1 ended with the first reason why prayer is important, which is, prayer re-aligns our hearts to the one who created us.Secondly, Prayer is important because it is powerful. In the second part of James 5:16, we read, “The prayer of...

When we look around us, we see people of no faith seemingly doing well in their lives and not having to deal with problems that we are aware of, including those that we have to deal with and it makes us wonder, “Why do we really need to pray? Does prayer even change anything? Won’t life just happen whether we pray or not?” These are some of the questions we will attempt to answer in this article. To understand why prayer is important, we need to go back to the first time prayer was mentioned in the scriptures. When God created Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, we are not entirely sure what the mode of communication between God and man was. We know that in Genesis 2:16, God commanded the man not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil telling him the conse...

We live in a world where so much is happening around us to bring discouragement to our souls. Almost endlessly, the news cycle spews out bad events happening around the world. It always seem as if there is a factory churning out these bad events; from people being killed in shootings to deaths caused by nature. It can be overwhelming being at the receiving end of these events day in and day out and many are desperate for answers to questions like, ‘Why are these things happening?’ and “what can be done to prevent these things from re-occurring”These are really difficult questions to answer and we won’t be the first ones to ask these questions. Most of the Psalms was written by David and in Psalms 10 he asks, “Why, Lord, do you stand...
