One of my all-time favorite quotes is from Coach John Wooden: "What really counts in life is what you learn after you know it all.

After the initial chuckle, that is an ouch-maker for most of us. The older we get, the more set in our ways we are likely to be. The older we get, the harder it is to master new skills and adapt to new paradigms. The older we get, the more likely we are to tune out ideas that would require re-thinking a point of view.

I wonder how all you older accountants and CPAs felt about replacing those pale green ledger sheets and sharp pencils with computer software. The software required one of those newfangled machines called a computer! Do you know anybody who said it was just a fad that wouldn't last?

Heavenly Fans
By Steve Popoola

I love football, the sport Americans call soccer. In Africa and in Nigeria particularly, this sport commands a very large followership and has the highest number of fans compared to other sports. I have noticed that one of the best times to drive in the city of Lagos is when a crucial match involving any of our national teams is going on. The roads would be free as people would be in their homes, offices, hotels or viewing centres watching the match.

You can tell by the mood of the crowd how the match is going. When the crowd is in a sombre mood and everywhere is so quiet you could almost hear the sound of a pin dropping on the ground, then you know the match isn’t going well in favour of the home team. When however you see sm...

(This is an extract of Steve Popoola's teaching at Redeemed Christian Church, Friends parish, London on 27th September 2009)

Introduction: God made us in His image and His likeness – We are objects of God created with His attributes. We inherit from Him the divine nature. Gen  1:26 - 28

When we examine the things God can do, it helps us to understand how far we can go with God, unlimited in His ability to make us what He wants us to be.

What is creation and who can create?

Creation is different from production or invention. Creation means bringing into existence something which never existed before; Making something out of nothing. “Calling those things that were not as if they existed” (Heb 11:13, Rom 4:17)

To invent or to produce, means...

One of the biggest telecommunications company in Nigeria came out with an advertisement with a question and answer jingle. The question goes, ‘Who rules your world?’ The answer comes with strong affirmation, ‘I rule!’ The emphasis in the advertisement is a call for the viewer to take charge and rule his world. In fact the bye-line of the advertisement is, ‘Rule Your World’.

The message in the advertisement sounds good but is it right? I am sure it could cause a debate if thrown open for discussion. However there are some lessons we can learn from this and that is the focus of this write-up.

In Gen 1:26, God said, ‘And God said, let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the se...

I am convinced that most of us want to do some great thing with our lives. But we labor under the illusion that the doing of authentically great things is reserved for a chosen few. Heroes. Martyrs. Saints. But not for you and me.

But what if the greatest thing is not to go out in a blaze of glory but to honor God with a life that seeks to do his will in the little things? Not to climb the highest mountain but to stay on the uneven course that life has marked out for you? Not dying for your faith but staying true to it over a difficult lifetime?

Try thinking of the 24-hour blocks of your life as bank-fresh bundles of a hundred $1 bills. Your challenge each day is to "spend your life." You can't bank it. You can't save up until you get 500 or 1000. You get a fresh h...

Let's Do It!

"And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it." (Luke 11:27 – 28)

Earlier in my Christian walk, I had the opportunity of attending lots of churches. From my experience, churches have different ways of running their services. Some emphasize different aspects of worship while down playing others. But one thing that is a common denominator is the place of prayer and sharing of God's word.

Some churches are more formal in their conduct of services. They have hymn books, they read scripture passages and engage in sol...
